Some New Fabric and a Good Cause

So, I went shopping this week. And this is just a bit of the fun that I found and brought home. The 2 bottom fabrics were in the clearance aisle and are for playing dress up. I am going to hem them and let the children do what they will. The oldest one, anyway. The green with spots fabric was something knitter #2 just had to have. While I was looking for something else, she kept insisting I come look at that fabric. She told me it was her new blanket. Good ploy, it worked. Mom IS a sucker. The striped fabric is mine, all mine. The other green fabric is for the back of my husband’s quilt.

Since I am going to take an art class, one of my aunts said she would take care of the kids while I go have fun. It is a real question who is going to be having more fun. She’s a real spoiler. Anyway, I am going to knit her a sweater for it. I have some more upcoming project ideas. Back before we were married, my husband asked me to knit him this sweater. It looks absolutely horrible because I hadn’t yet realized the true importance of guage. I am going to tear it out and knit it into something that looks a lot better. I should also do the finish work on an afghan I knit a couple years ago. After I finish that afghan, I can put that yarn into the stash to use up. I’ve been having fun using up stuff from my stash.

If you want to use up some of your stash for a good cause, go check out The Lone Knitter. She and her sweetie’s mother are going to make blankets to donate to the hospital where a loved one recently passed away from cancer. You can knit an afghan, 8x8 squares, or a baby blanket to donate (and for entries in her contest).

Steeking

I forgot to mention in my last post, we had a white Christmas here. The snow is all gone now, but it was white for a few days. We even had a snowman.

Now, some of you out there may remember a sweater called Marihone. I managed to get it all finished for Christmas party wearing by the littlest knitter. I have some pictures of the steeking process. The first picture is of it pinned and ready for sewing(on the machine). The second picture is of me cutting the steek. The third is the cut steek. I have never steeked before, but it was a good experience and I would do it again. Naturally, there is a fourth finished object picture.

Maybe by the end of the year, I will have another finished object. Perhaps I could finish the stuffed bunny and bears. Yes, I have sadly missed my Christmas morning deadline. If I had done all my finishing work along the way, I could have had 2 of the animals under the tree. However, I think that the girls won’t care if they get a gift and it isn’t Christmas.

Our Christmas this year was the Christmas of books. Lots and lots of books. We like this at our house. Amongst the goodies were Eloise (The Ultimate Edition), Bats at the Beach, and Runaway Bunny. Plus there were Tinker Toys and loads of wood blocks. Yup, our house is now officially a death trap. Little blocks just waiting to scoot around a corner and nail your feet in the darkness. After they get you down, who knows….

Some Christmas Goodies

I can't believe I haven't posted in like 2 weeks. That's terrible. I have finished projects. Been gifted. Yes, gifted. Secret Pal strikes again. I even gifted my person, but it was just a gift certificate. Nothing to show you. Anyway, my secret pal sent me some fun. Yarn, washcloths, tea, and a felted basket. She also included the pattern she used to make the washcloths. The yarn is Crystal Palace cotton chenille. So soft. No kitchen cloths there. No way. They are mine. I might share with the girls. Maybe. The ones my pal made are knit out of the same kind of yarn that she sent me. I can't decide where I am going to use my basket. I love it, though.

And I finished the pillow in time to be sent off to Seattle for Christmas. I will never, ever make up ruffles as I go again. In the future, I will do the ruffles the way the pattern states. I hate ruffles. The middle ruffle was the first mistake, and a huge one. It actually broke the end of one of my knitting needles. I had to use a needle 3 or 4 sizes smaller to get it bound off. The end result is pretty, but I wouldn't make that project again. Unless I just followed the instructions. There's always that.

Blogger won't let me post the pictures right now, so I may have to come back later to post them.

Knitting Knews

I wish I had some cool finished object pictures, but I don't. All I want to do is sew, and all I have been doing is knitting. It's just one of those things. If you have a long project that you really need to finish, you don't want to work on it. You want to go do something else. That is where I am. I am tired of christmas knitting. I want to do some me knitting or some me sewing. Well, sewing at the least. I do have a christmas sewing project for my sweetie, but it ran short on fabric. Very annoying. I must have just guessed at how much fabric I would need. Have to get more.

I whittled down my list of christmas knitting to one more bear. I am currently working on a pillow that is BORING. There is no way I could take the achy fingers that the bunny caused. I need more socks and there aren't going to be more socks until the second bear is finished. The first one was really fun to knit, too.

Somewhere recently someone (probably the add knitter) mentioned that they were seeing a lot of fair isle knitting in the knitting magazines. I think they were right. I 've been seeing a lot of short row shaping, too. Previous to the bears, I think most of the shortrow shaping I have done was in sock heels. I really enjoyed all the short rows in the bear because it never gets boring. You aren't doing the same thing row after row. It keeps your mind alert. Some times you do want something you don't have to think on. Something that can relax you and be mindless.

Anyway, I am going to be thinking of all those people out there who don't give themselves the christmas knitting headache until I finish mine! Those smart people...... (oh sure, their kids won't be delighting in handknit bears on Christmas morning, but they ARE knitting something fun right now)

Who's Got Christmas Spirit?

I do! We are done decorating for Christmas, I think. The tree is up and decorated, and christmassy things are placed around the house. We started with the outdoor lights on Saturday. No one else in the neighborhood has lights to speak of. In the country, there aren't many people who decorate their yard or house. The picture is the lights on the arbor over our gate. The arbor is a home made out of pressure treated logs sort of thing. The kind they sell for fence posts. Someday there will be roses growing on it.

I even have managed to get some knitting done during all the decorating. Nothing worth showing yet, though. I have gotten some new knitting magazines, though. I've never picked Vogue Knitting or Knitscene before. I really like Knitscene. I am not sure yet about VK, though. There are some things in it that I love. And some things that I think are horrible. I am used to IK where the patterns are with the pictures. I like that kind of layout better, I think. There are things in nearly every IK that I wouldn't make on a bet.

I have a date with The Mummy and some knitting now....

An Anniversary

I decided to show you a picture of some of my spinning. The stuff off the spindle is the very first fiber that I spun. It is merino roving that I bought in September.

Today is the anniversary of when I started my blog. I was working on gloves last year at this time.

I found the coolest necklace today. So I bought it and plan on wearing it with a new top I am going to make in time to wear for christmas. Nothing like adding to a long list. I didn't think to get a picture of it when I took the spindle picture. It has butterflies on it and is strung on ribbon. It is SO cool. I love butterflies.

I can't believe it is friday already. We are going to put up christmas lights this weekend. I have already started listening to christmas music. Nothing like getting in the spirit...
